Here is the truth of the matter, many people believe if they ignore what is going on around them things will stay the same. After all, why should they modify anything when things are comfortable? Complacency sets in and things go along great until one day something happens - a health crisis, a family issue, or other problems. John C Maxwell, a known authority on leadership, states, "We all must deal with change. We have two choices: we either change now to avoid future problems or we change later to get out of those problems." Mr. Maxwell's words are wise. Most people remain so caught up in the now they are not prepared for what is to come.
Think of change as waves in the stream of life. We swim with those waves as they flow in its chosen direction. The wind blows or small ripples start to shift direction. Instead of adjusting our strokes, we keep swimming against the new current. Our circumstances became difficult. We become uncomfortable. At this point, we sink or adjust. The great news is you never have to find yourself in such a predicament. You can choice to deal with change on YOUR terms. You start by paying attention to the waves in the water. Next, you spend a few minutes each day preparing - learning new stokes to go with the coming flow.
Okay, so most of us already know transformation requires preparation in attitude, skills, and/or behaviors. Interestingly, I read somewhere that there is a one in nine chance of successfully changing. This goes to show how many people fight against the inevitable. Fortunately, you know the secret. Now use motivation from these three facts:
- You will either pay now to do the work needed to change or you will double the pain, because you will be forced to change anyway. By this time, you are unprepared and dealing with the consequences of your choice.
- You have many of examples of people who have successfully changed - busy lifestyle and all. Use these people for encouragement and motivation.
- If you accept change will continue to happen, you can shift your focus to finding opportunity from what is to come.
I think one of the biggest lessons we can from dealing with change is to have a clear picture of your life - your goals. You have to recognize continuous progress is needed even to maintain your current state. It all boils down to this - you can go with the flow or fight it. Either way - you will change.
